BTS Group and its Role to Accelerate the Development of Net Zero Rail Transportation

Back

BTS Group emphasises Thailand's potential to reach Net Zero rail transportation through regulatory measures and incentives. The company highlighted the collective action necessary to reduce reliance on private vehicles and to encourage the sustainable development of public transportation, aiming to significantly decrease traffic-related pollution and contribute to the global fight against climate change.

Mr. Daniel Ross, Head of Sustainability and Chief Investment Officer at BTS Group Holdings PCL (BTS Group), delivered a keynote on the “Development of Net Zero for Rail Transportation”, within a session on “Regulations for the Sustainable Development of Logistics and Transportation Sector”, as part of the Road to Net Zero 2024: The Extraordinary Green conference hosted by Thansetthakij at the Royal Maneeya Ballroom Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel.

Being the world’s most sustainable transportation company for 4 consecutive years, as ranked by S&P Global, BTS Group has announced its commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050 in line with the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). This commitment is aligned with the national target to achieve Net Zero by 2065, as part of the country’s commitment with the Paris Agreement.

Mr. Daniel Ross stated “In order to make Net Zero Transport possible, governments need to reorient their Net Zero transport plan around a backbone of electric rail. Rail is cleaner, quieter, more affordable, and benefits from economies of scale. There needs to be investment in rail network expansion for both people and goods, empowering commuters and driving change. This modal shift needs to be accelerated, and BTS Group is ready to help Thailand achieve its targets under the Nationally Determined Contributions”.

BTS Group, since its founding in 1999, has been dedicated to sustainable development and the transition to a decarbonised economy. The company has avoided over 2.1 million tCO2e emissions by facilitating 4 billion sustainable trips on BTS SkyTrains, equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting 222 million trees.

BTS Group’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation is driven by its 3M business model: MOVE, MIX, and MATCH. This approach has enabled the company to engage across industries, accelerating necessary changes to benefit the community and protect the planet's future.
